The Design Newsletter Market: Incumbents, Platforms, and 15 Niches That Should Ship in 2026
A research note on the email-newsletter layer of the design industry, who owns it, who is selling into it, and where a bootstrapped founder can still carve a defensible slot.
1. 1. Abstract
Design newsletters are a $50M to $100M annual slice of the creator economy. The biggest one, UX Collective, has around 190,000 subscribers on Substack. The second, Smashing, has 185,000. The archetypal solo operator, Kai Brach's Dense Discovery, has ~38,000 subscribers and clears an estimated $150k to $250k/year from a single weekly send. Meng To's Design+Code funnel around its newsletter reportedly does $1M/year.
The market is also visibly shifting. Substack lost designers through 2025 to beehiiv (flat pricing, 0% cut on paid subs, an active Ad Network distributing ~$1M/month). InVision's entire content operation (Inside Design) shut down in late 2024. Dropbox Design's Medium publication went dormant. Layers Magazine, Abduzeedo, and Design Shack are gone or decaying. Even Sidebar.io (Sacha Greif's daily since 2011) went on an announced hiatus in early 2025 per Fabricio Teixeira's LinkedIn post.
Meanwhile, underserved niches with loud communities keep multiplying: motion design (Motion Hatch 10k Discord, School of Motion 500k YT, Lottie 1M+ creators), design engineers (Rauno Freiberg 90k on X, Emil Kowalski 70k), AI in design (AIxDesign 8k, monthly cadence only), design ops (DesignOps LOL at 2k subs total), industrial design for indies, working illustrators, design hiring (ADPList has 38k mentors and 602k sessions/year but no newsletter).
This paper maps who exists, what they charge, who bought what, and which 15 specific newsletters a single person could ship this weekend and turn into a bootstrap business within 24 months.
2. 2. The top of the stack
Subscriber counts and ballpark revenue (April 2026). Where figures are public, I cite; where estimated, I mark "est."
2.1 Large free curation / editorial
| Newsletter | Owner | Subs | Freq | Sponsor slot | Revenue model |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| UX Collective | Fabricio Teixeira + Caio Braga | ~190k (Substack) | Weekly | 4-figure | Medium partner + sponsors |
| Smashing Newsletter | Smashing Media | ~185k | Biweekly | $2,500+ | Ads + membership + conferences + books |
| The Looking Glass | Julie Zhuo | ~97k | Monthly | free tier | Paid sub $6/mo, est $200k+ ARR |
| Frontend Focus | Cooperpress | ~73.8k | Weekly | ~$3,500 to $4,500 | Ads (Cooperpress family) |
| Dan Mall Teaches | Dan Mall | ~66.8k | Weekly | undisclosed | Course funnel (Design Systems University) |
| Baymard Newsletter | Christian Holst + Jamie Appleseed | ~60k | Quarterly | n/a | $2,400+/yr research membership, $5M+ ARR est |
| Learn UI Design | Erik D. Kennedy | ~60k | Monthly | undisclosed | Course funnel ($1,000 course, 7-figure est) |
| UX Movement | Anthony Tseng | ~55k | Weekly | n/a | Paid sub $9/mo on Substack |
| UX Design Weekly | Kenny Chen | ~42k | Weekly | $500/slot | Sponsor-only |
| Sidebar.io | Sacha Greif | ~40k | Daily (hiatus) | $950/slot | Sponsor-only |
| Dense Discovery | Kai Brach | ~38k | Weekly | $599 main, $79 classified | Sponsors + Friends membership $22/yr |
| Codrops Collective | Manoela Ilic | ~17k newsletter / 180k X | Biweekly | via BuySellAds | Frontend-dev crossover |
2.2 Niche / solo-operator
- Typewolf (Jeremiah Shoaf): ~250k monthly site visitors. Newsletter subs est 30k to 50k. Weekly. Font affiliates + Gumroad lists + sponsor ads. Solo operator since 2013.
- Figmalion: $350/sponsor slot. ~15k to 25k subs est. Figma-focused.
- One Page Love (Rob Hope, Cape Town, since 2008): biweekly, est 25k to 40k subs. Sponsor packages bundled with site listings.
- DesignOps LOL (Ch'an Armstrong): ~2k subs. Biweekly. Sponsor slots live on newsletter site.
- Always Twisted Design Systems (Lewis Healey): 3,700 subs, 54% open, 16% CTR. Sponsor inventory.
- AIxDesign (Nadia Piet): 8k community across 63 countries, monthly cadence. Free.
- Refactoring UI (Adam Wathan + Steve Schoger): book and course funnel. Newsletter est 60k+. Sells the book/course, the newsletter is the funnel.
- Design+Code (Meng To): reported $1M/yr revenue. Newsletter funnels to SwiftUI/iOS courses.
- Memorisely (Zander Whitehurst): bootcamp business, newsletter is a feeder. Threads/LinkedIn-first growth.
2.3 Corporate / editorial publication
- Dezeen Debate (formerly Dezeen Weekly): millions of monthly readers, newsletters claim hundreds of thousands. Direct ad sales, 4-figure CPM. Architecture-adjacent but covers design broadly.
- Eye on Design (AIGA): ~100k+ subs, 1M+ social. Free, funded by AIGA membership dues. Print + digital.
- It's Nice That (UK) + Creative Lives in Progress: newsletter integrated with events and jobs board revenue. Est 80k to 100k subs.
- Core77: 24k+ newsletter, industrial design focus. Relatively small for the category.
- Brand New / UnderConsideration (Armin Vit + Bryony Gomez-Palacio): went paid 2022. 1.25M pageviews/month. Revenue 100% from subscriptions + Brand New Conference.
- DIELINE (packaging): DIELINE Pro at $2.99/mo or $29.99/yr. Weekly "Shelf Life." Shifted from pure ad model.
- Nielsen Norman Group: Monday weekly, est 400k+ subs. Course funnel ($1,500 to $5,000 trainings).
2.4 What you might remember that is now dead
- InVision Inside Design: entire content operation wound down end of 2024 alongside the product shutdown.
- Dropbox Design: team disbanded 2022 to 2023. Medium publication dormant.
- Layers Magazine: long gone.
- Abduzeedo, Design Shack: dormant or decaying.
- Femke Van Schoonhoven's Honest Weekly: no active newsletter; she moved to YouTube.
- Sidebar.io: "taking a break" early 2025 per Fabricio Teixeira's LinkedIn. Daily since 2011, now paused. Biggest vacuum in the market.
- Tinyletter: shut down 2024.
- Revue: shut down 2023.
Sidebar being on hiatus matters. Sacha Greif's daily was the default design-curation newsletter for 14 years. With it on pause, the top-of-funnel for "daily design links" is contested. This is a specific, named opportunity.
3. 3. The platform layer (April 2026)
Where to ship matters for economics, not just UX.
| Platform | Base price | Cut on paid | Key fact |
|---|---|---|---|
| beehiiv | Free to 2,500 subs; $49/mo Grow; $99/mo Scale | 0% (Stripe 2.9% + $0.30) | Ad Network distributing ~$1M/mo; Boosts 20% rev share; capturing designer exodus. At $25K/mo sub revenue beehiiv costs ~$725 vs Substack $3,240. |
| Substack | Free | 10% on paid | Still dominant in raw reach (UX Collective 190k, Looking Glass). Notes drives network effects beehiiv lacks. |
| Ghost | $108/mo floor (Ghost Pro) | 0% | Self-hostable; full theme control; weak discovery. Good for brand-first pubs. |
| Buttondown | Free to 100, $9/mo to 1k, $29/mo at 5k | 0% | Indie favorite. Justin Duke. |
| Kit (ex-ConvertKit) | $15/mo/300 subs Creator tier | 0% | Commerce built in. Used by Rob Hope, Kai Brach historically. |
| Mailchimp | Enterprise-only now | varies | Not competitive for creators. |
| Memberful | $25/mo base + 4.9% | 4.9% | Used by Smashing membership and many WordPress publications. |
| Tinyletter | Dead | n/a | Killed 2024. |
| Revue | Dead | n/a | Killed 2023. |
What the platform shift means for a new design newsletter: beehiiv at under 10k subs is the cheapest high-leverage pick. The Ad Network onboarding minimum is 1,000 subs + 20% open rate, which is 6 to 12 months of work for a focused niche. Ghost wins if the newsletter is a fragment of a larger publication (conferences, memberships). Substack wins for pure-reach essays that benefit from Notes. Buttondown wins for pure text-first solos.
4. 4. Sponsor economics
Where the money actually comes from when there is no paid tier.
4.1 Rate cards (confirmed)
- Sidebar.io: $950/slot, 2k to 4k clicks per slot. Historically averaged ~$3,000/month.
- Dense Discovery: main sponsor $599/issue, classifieds $79/issue (4 per issue, 200 chars). 60% open rate, 13% CTR. 384 issues.
- UX Design Weekly: $500/slot. Sponsors historically Figma, Webflow, Adobe.
- Smashing Newsletter: campaigns from $2,500. Listed on BuySellAds and Paved.
- Frontend Focus (Cooperpress): ~$3,500 to $4,500/slot. 73.8k subs.
- Figmalion: $350/slot.
- DesignOps LOL: sponsor inventory live, low-4-figure range.
- Always Twisted Design Systems Newsletter: slots live, modest pricing.
4.2 Industry CPM
B2B design niches: $50 to $100+ CPM. Broader design: $15 to $35. Premium spots (1 ad per send at a niche audience) command higher.
4.3 Affiliate programs designers can stack on top
- Figma: $3/signup, or 30% of first Pro purchase (up to $54), 90-day cookie.
- Framer: 50% of subscription revenue for 1 year on upgrades within 90 days. Template sales keep full commission.
- Webflow: standard ~50%/first year.
- Notion: 50% year one.
- Other active programs: ProtoPie, Untitled UI, Segment UI, LogoLab, various font foundries.
4.4 Job boards embedded in newsletters
- Dribbble Jobs ~$299/30 days.
- Authentic Jobs.
- Working Not Working.
- Designer News Jobs.
- ADPList opportunities feed (38k mentors, 602k sessions/yr).
Stacking pattern: 1 paid sponsor + 4 classifieds + 1 affiliate link + 1 job listing = $500 to $1,500/week at 20k+ engaged subs.
5. 5. The paid newsletter model for design
Works: deep case studies, interviews, templates, workshops, research access. Fails: generic curated links behind a paywall.
Designers making it work:
- Lenny Rachitsky (product + design crossover): 1M subs, 18k paid at $15/mo or $150/yr, $300 "Expense It" tier. $2M+/yr from paid alone, $4M+ all-in. Adjacent to design leadership.
- Kai Brach / Dense Discovery: "Friends of DD" at $22/yr, non-gated model. Content stays free; membership is an appreciation layer with DD Index (searchable archive) and DD Lounge Discord (launched August 2024).
- DIELINE Pro: $2.99/mo or $29.99/yr for archive + "Shelf Life" weekly.
- Nathan Yau / FlowingData: paid "The Process" weekday newsletter + membership since 2007. One of the oldest paid design-data pubs.
- Julie Zhuo / The Looking Glass: $6/mo or less annual. Mix of free + paid.
- UX Movement: $9/mo Substack premium.
Pricing benchmarks that hold up in design:
- $5/mo: generic broad audience. Hard to scale.
- $9 to $15/mo: serious working professional. Sweet spot.
- $20 to $50/mo: niche SaaS-replacement. Needs rare access (research, templates, office hours).
- $100+/mo: enterprise research (Baymard).
6. 6. The community + newsletter combo
Newsletter alone is fragile. Newsletter + community is durable.
- Smashing Magazine: newsletter (185k) + Slack-adjacent forums + membership + 2x/yr conferences + books + courses.
- Dense Discovery: newsletter + DD Lounge Discord (2024) + print legacy (Offscreen) + Friends membership.
- Design Buddies (Grace Ling): Discord ~75k members. Career/mentorship focus. Monetized via sponsorships.
- Designer Hangout: Slack ~18k to 23k UX pros. Invite-only. Aging.
- Ladies That UX (Lizzie Dyson, Gerogie Bottomley): Slack, thousands, global.
- DesignOps Assembly (Meredith Black): 1,000+ practitioners, Slack + chapters.
- AIxDesign (Nadia Piet): 8k community across 63 countries, monthly newsletter.
- ADPList: 38k+ mentors, 602k sessions in 2025. Zero newsletter overlay. This is a clear gap.
- Three.js Journey (Bruno Simon): 21k+ Discord. Course + community. No newsletter.
- Motion Hatch: 10k+ Discord. Podcast. No dominant newsletter.
- Cassie Evans / GSAP: Webflow acquired GSAP. Huge motion audience. No newsletter.
7. 7. Oversaturated niches (avoid)
Do not ship into these. There is no oxygen left.
- Generic weekly design-link roundup. Competitors: Sidebar, UX Design Weekly, Codrops Collective, Muzli, Hey Designer, Designer News, Fundament, Design Buddies weekly, KissMyUI, 1stWebDesigner. Over 100 attempts, 3 winners.
- Generic "UX tips" Substacks. UX Movement, Great UX, UX Things, UX/UI Hub, Secrets to Great UX all compete for the same audience.
- Figma-specific curation. Figmalion + Config newsletter + Shortcut + Figma's own content operations own this.
- "Beginner UX career" advice. Memorisely, Career Foundry, Design Buddies, ADPList creators, dozens of YouTube-to-newsletter pivots.
- "X ideas for designers" listicle newsletters. Dead format.
8. 8. Underserved niches with active communities (lean in)
Each of these has an active community (>5k Discord/X/Slack), a visible content gap, and an implicit audience with money.
-
Motion design / GSAP / Lottie / After Effects. Communities: Motion Hatch Discord 10k+, School of Motion YT 500k+, Lottie 1M+ creators, GSAP forum active. No dominant weekly newsletter. Budget: ads from GSAP (Webflow-owned), Spline, Lottie, Rive.
-
Three.js / WebGL / generative. Bruno Simon's Three.js Journey 21k Discord. Codrops covers it as a blog. No curated weekly. Budget: Spline, Luma AI, Rive, gaussian-splatting tool makers.
-
Design engineers (frontend + design hybrid). Rauno Freiberg 90k X, Emil Kowalski 70k X, Vercel Ship 2025, Figma Make, v0 audience. No dedicated newsletter. Budget: Vercel, Framer, Linear, Arc/Dia, Railway, Supabase.
-
AI-in-design daily. AIxDesign is monthly and community-first. No daily/weekly curation of v0, Galileo, Figma AI, Uizard, Lovable, Magic Patterns, Relume, Play.ai, Motionfactor, etc. Budget: every AI design tool is dropping $5k+ for a sponsor slot to reach designers.
-
Design ops and design leadership at 10 to 200-person companies. DesignOps LOL 2k subs. NN/g + Rosenfeld own enterprise. Mid-market gap wide open.
-
Industrial / product design for indie makers. Core77 is enterprise-adjacent. Dezeen is architecture-adjacent. No dedicated indie industrial-design newsletter for founders making Kickstarter-level physical products.
-
Working illustrator business newsletter. Pablo Stanley ships assets. Illustration Age is small. No "Lenny Rachitsky for illustrators" (rates, contracts, tools, AI threat, client acquisition).
-
Service design and procurement design. NN/g covers peripherally. No dominant weekly. Healthcare + gov + banking + insurance design teams. High-ACV B2B audience.
-
Design hiring and market data. ADPList has 38k mentors and 602k sessions in 2025. DesignerHangout Slack aging. No weekly "design hiring market report" with hiring trends, salary data, agency vs in-house moves, layoffs.
-
Accessibility weekly. A11y Weekly exists (issue #273+). Sara Soueidan's Frontend Field Notes (200k reach) at 2 to 3-week cadence. Stable but thin; EU Accessibility Act (June 2025) + DOJ Title II (April 2026) are catalysts. Compliance-driven audience.
-
Design systems for non-enterprise. Romina Kavcic "Design System Guide" growing. Lewis Healey at 3,700 subs. Jina Anne's Sass News at ~3k. The audience is huge (every product team); the newsletters are tiny.
-
Packaging design for indie brands. DIELINE dominates via paid tier. No indie free-to-read weekly for people launching a DTC product.
-
Fashion/footwear/vehicle/interior design. Business of Fashion dominates fashion at $35/mo BoF Pro. Footwear, vehicle, interior: no dominant newsletter.
-
Data viz curation (indie). FlowingData paid daily. Nightingale biweekly. Gap for a free weekly "best data viz of the week" with a clear editorial voice.
-
Design labor / union / politics. AIGA Eye on Design touches politics. No dedicated weekly on design unions, labor conditions, AI job impact, the freelance-vs-FTE transition, agency closures.

10. 10. Ranking by leverage
If the goal is "bootstrap a design newsletter to $30k/month inside 24 months with a solo operator," rank by (audience size) × (sponsor willingness) × (shipping simplicity).
- AI Design Daily (9.3). Every AI design startup will buy, the cadence drives retention, the content is infinite.
- Motion Weekly (9.1). 10M+ addressable audience, starved of curation.
- Daily Design / Sidebar replacement (9.15). Vacated top-of-funnel slot. 14-year-old audience.
- Design Engineer Digest (9.2). High-ACV sponsors (Vercel, Framer, Linear).
- Hiring Report: Design (9.8). Paid tier + job board combined.
- A11y Weekly Pro (9.9). Regulation-driven buyer, compliance CPM.
- System for Two (9.10). Mid-market design-system buyer is huge.
- Viz of the Week (9.13). Low-friction content, broad audience.
- DesignOps Review (9.4). Small-TAM but high-ACV.
- The Working Illustrator (9.6). Paid community, creator-economy overlap.
- Service Design Review (9.7). Enterprise gold, harder to ship.
- Indie Object (9.5). Industrial design is passionate, ACV is decent.
- Shelf Talk (9.11). Adjacent to creator-economy and indie DTC.
- The Drive (9.12). Auto sponsor ACV is huge but sales cycle is long.
- Design Labor (9.14). Mission-aligned, sponsor economics are thin.
11. 11. The bootstrap playbook (Dense Discovery pattern)
Kai Brach does one weekly send, ~4 hours of curation, 2 hours of writing, one sponsor, 4 classifieds, one membership tier at $22/year, a Discord launched in year 11. Revenue is estimated $150k to $250k/year solo. Rough template for any new entrant:
- Pick one underbuilt niche from section 8. Commit to 18 months.
- beehiiv + Stripe + a Discord on day 1.
- Weekly cadence. Miss no weeks. The cadence is the product.
- One primary sponsor slot from day 30.
- Four classified slots from day 60 at $50 to $150/each.
- Affiliate links to the category's tools from day 1.
- Membership at $20 to $30/year from month 12. Gate nothing; offer archive search, a Discord role, a quarterly PDF.
- Cross-promotions with adjacent newsletters from month 3. Swapstack, Sparkloop.
- One public "year in review" post per year. This drives the biggest subscriber spikes.
- Ship a physical artifact in year 2 (book, print zine, postcard set). Brach did this with Offscreen. It is a retention anchor.
12. 12. Disqualifiers
Skip an idea if any of these apply.
- The niche has an active >10k-sub competitor with consistent weekly cadence. Starting there is a war of attrition.
- Your audience uses Medium or LinkedIn more than email. Newsletters die in LinkedIn-first verticals; those audiences do not subscribe.
- Your sponsors are all one category (e.g., Figma plugins only). Any category shift kills revenue.
- The niche is less than 5,000 total addressable subs. Even 100% capture is not a business.
- The cadence is quarterly or less. You cannot build a habit at that rate.
- Paid tier from day 1 with generic content. Only works with a prior audience (Julie Zhuo, Lenny).
- You plan to outsource the writing. Design audiences detect bylines instantly. Solo voice or small team with credits.
13. 13. What the sponsor mix actually looks like at 25k subs
Based on the Dense Discovery public numbers and industry CPMs, a realistic monthly P&L at 25,000 engaged subs with a weekly cadence:
- 4 primary sponsors × $500 = $2,000
- 16 classifieds × $79 = $1,264
- 4 affiliate clicks converting at 3% × $20 avg commission × 25k × 0.05 CTR = ~$750
- 1 job board posting × $299 = $299
- Membership: 300 of 25k × $22/year / 12 = $550
- Total: ~$4,863/month
- Costs: beehiiv $99/mo + Stripe $30/mo + domain/hosting $20/mo = ~$150/mo
- Net: ~$4,700/month. Solo. 4 to 6 hours/week.
At 50k subs with better sponsor pricing ($1,000 to $1,500 primary), the math doubles. At 100k with paid tier, it is Kai Brach / Lenny Rachitsky territory ($150k to $2M+/year).
14. 14. Conclusion
The design newsletter market is not dying. It is consolidating. The middle has been gutted (InVision, Dropbox Design, Layers, TinyLetter). The top is steady (UX Collective, Smashing, Looking Glass). The bottom is churning. The specific thing in 2026 is that beehiiv's economics (0% cut on paid, ad network, flat pricing) make niche solo operators viable at a level that Substack's 10% cut always left on the table. Sidebar's hiatus specifically vacated the daily-curation throne. AI design tools are VC-funded and buying any email list they can find.
If you are a designer with a point of view and a willingness to ship every week for 18 months, one of the 15 niches in section 8 is your business. Pick the underserved niche with the largest addressable community and the loudest sponsor category. Ship weekly. Charge for membership at month 12. Ship a physical artifact in year 2.
The market is ready. The distribution is open. The sponsors are asking.
