Order of Operations: PEMDAS for Startups

By Jason Levin — Original on Memelord Magazine

After raising $3M for Memelord, Levin discovered his existing systems needed complete restructuring—a lesson that prompted deep reflection on prioritization.

1. Content Creation vs. Product Building

From 2023–2024, Levin generated millions of Instagram views with NYC prank content. He deliberately stepped back from social media to focus on building Memelord.com: “If I was so focused on getting millions of views on Instagram, I wouldn’t have been able to raise $3M.”

Once the product reached maturity, he resumed aggressive marketing—now achieving 50K-view videos while driving sales.

2. Design → Engineering → Marketing

Memelord operates as a design-led company with strict sequential workflow:

  1. Design phase comes first
  2. Engineering executes the design
  3. Marketing promotes the finished product

Reversing this sequence wastes resources. Poor design briefs frustrate engineers; premature marketing of incomplete products exhausts budgets without user retention.

3. Key Takeaway

Strategic prioritization prevents wasted effort and team frustration. “You can literally just lock out of something that isn’t important at a given time and come back when you’re ready.”
